There wasn't much of excitement until we hit the rocks (see my report
of Jan.30, 1999). The entrance into the rocky section looks scary enough,
with abandoned pickup truck on the background, but in fact it's not too
bad. Maybe the only ones to be a little concerned should be us with Pete
Griffith, for our rigs being unable to fit square between a steep muddy
and rooty bank on the left and a tree on the right. Normally baby jeeps
go right on. Some folks sounded sort of conscious of possible sheetmetal
damage, so off we went in our full-size jeeps to lead the way. Maybe my
memory is failing me and it was Pete - the other Pete, not me and not Pete
Griffith - in his beautiful white '89 Wrangler locked front and rear? Anyway,
photos of the rocks abound in my old report, so I won't waste any more
bandwidth on that. At a place called Oasis we stopped for a quick
lunch - and I started some minor trail fixes. My jeep ran alarmingly hot;
one culprit was slipping fan clutch, so it was jammed solid with a hose
clamp.
Sandwiches eaten, fixes performed, jeeps admired enough - time to move on. On to the Z-turn. The place is just in a few minutes driving (or ~20 minutes hike) from Oasis, and here another revision of possible body damage took place. Anyway, nobody chickened out, and birds' singing was enhanced with sounds of skid plates banging against the rocks. |

Animated GIF - a bit annoying flickery thing, will eventually be replaced with a video.
